May 31 - Electronically Isolated Tendon Pilot Project - SH146 in Kemah, Texas

Abstract

Fully encapsulated tendons or PL2 tendons, provided enhanced durability performance. Currently post tensioning practice itself in the U.S. does not provide the ability to remotely monitor in-service tendon condition. Electrically Isolated post-tensioning Systems (EIT), or PL3 tendon, provides high level of corrosion protection and the ability to monitor PT tendon condition throughout a structure’s life cycle. SH 146 Bridge Bent 107 in Kemah Texas was selected as a FHWA pilot project on EIT application and was cosponsored by Texas DOT. Additional technology such as vacuum assisted grouting and VCsensors were used as quality control measurement tool during grouting process. The data gathered from VCsensors while the grout is still in its fluid state verifies the complete filling of grout or if a secondary injection is required. The use of VCsensors eliminates the needs to drill behind the anchor or bearing plate, which is the current PT practice and potentially compromises EIT performance.

Presenter: Jordan Sessa, Structural Technologies

June 28 - Opportunities for Launching Gantries and Precast Segmental Construction

Abstract

Overhead launching girders are an effective tool to erect precast segmental bridges using the span-by-span method. Approach ramps of the Corpus Christi Harbor Bridge are currently being erected using this equipment. A single launching girder will erect around 100 spans of varying length and cross-sectional width, at a maximum height in excess of 200’. This project serves to highlight logistical advantages launching girders provide, required gantry kinematics, as well as design and schedule considerations.

Presenter: Harry McElroy, McNary Bergeron and Johannesen

Harry has worked on bridges, serving primarily as a construction engineer for the past 7 years.  Notable projects include the I-395 Miami Signature Span where he is performing longitudinal construction analyses of the arches and superstructures; fieldwork on the I-59/20 Birmingham CBD Bridges including equipment sign-off, repair procedures, and general trouble-shooting; and gantry kinematics and design review on US-181 Harbor Bridge in Corpus Christi.  Harry got his start working on pedestrian bridges in Bolivia, Panama, and Eswatini with Bridges to Prosperity and Engineers in Action, and continues to mentor university teams.
