Herbert C. Bonner Bridge, North Carolina


Construction of the design-build Bonner Bridge project is scheduled to begin in December 2012 with completion in February 2016 (Fig. 1). The project involves the replacement of the Herbert C. Bonner Bridge across Oregon Inlet from Bodie Island to Hatteras Island in Dare County, North Carolina. The replacement bridge will be approximately 2.8 miles in length and consist of two 12-foot travel lanes and two 8-foot shoulders.

Demolition of the existing bridge will occur after the new bridge is constructed. The new bridge will include nine navigational spans across Oregon Inlet, each having a vertical clearance of 70 feet and a horizontal span length of 350 feet.
