Pitkins Curve Bridge, California Route 1 Near Lucia (Monterey County), California

SEGMENTS, WINTER 2012, VOL. 57

The new Pitkins Curve Bridge is located mid-way between Carmel-by-the-Sea and Cambria, just north of Limekiln State Beach (Figs. 19, 20 and 21). The new bridge and adjacent rock shed will realign the road and reduce the impact of landslides and falling rocks common to this area. Golden State Bridge of Martinez, California submitted the low bid at $29 million.

The 620 foot bridge utilizes a cast-in-place pre-stressed box girder design. The back-spans and a portion of the main span are constructed on falsework. Difficult access and unstable ground precluded falsework construction for the center portion of the main span. A form traveler is used to construct the center 240 foot of the main span, cantilevering 8 segments from each side with a midspan closure. Superstructure construction is scheduled for completion in December 2011.
