Straight and Curved Spliced Girders in Action
Abstract:
Spliced post-tensioned precast concrete bridges give owners and designers options to extend span ranges beyond standard pre-tensioned bridge designs. And they can be used on both straight and curved alignments. This presentation will discuss the design and construction of both straight and curved spliced post-tensioned precast girder bridges with real world examples.
The GIWW Bridge at Sargent Beach carries FM 457 over the Intercoastal Waterway in Matagorda County, TX. The main span bridge utilizes straight precast post-tensioned bulb-T girders that span 300 ft over the navigation channel.
The SH99 / SH249 Interchange Project in Tomball, TX utilizes four curved spliced post-tensioned precast concrete U-girder flyover ramp structures for a new highway interchange. ramps were constructed on a 912 ft radius with spans up to 271 ft and precast girder segments weighing 300,000 lbs. The design and construction of these 4th level flyover bridges needed to accommodate maintenance of traffic on a congested project site.
Spliced post-tensioned precast concrete bridges provide the solution used to meet the unique challenges of each project.
